‘False Dawn’ depicts an unfolding panoramic island landscape ‘Eilen Dubh na Ciste’ (Black Isle of the Coffin) off the southwest coast of Mull, near the historic fishing village of Kintra, drawn in the early morning light.
Locally known as Coral Island, the Isle like many in the area, includes the generic name Eilean Dubh or Black Isle, an example of the British Ordnance Survey’s unilateral multi-descriptive anglicisation of Gaelic placenames in mid-nineteenth century Scotland.
Nothing in the geology, form, flora or fauna, including its main feature of golden sands, suggests the descriptor ‘Black’…
